The piece is based on what I observed on my weekly walk to NCAD. The work catalogues my journey, both creative and figuratively; the details that make up Thomas Street, the cracks, road-markings and nature, are represented through a variety of creative embroidery methods that I practiced throughout the course.
It comprises 9 canvases, each measuring 15 x 15cm. The background medium of 5 of the pieces is linen fabric while the other 4 are on paper that I created from scrap paper, tissue and then distressed with gesso and water colours to depict pavements. All 9 pieces contain embroidery, both hand and free machine. Also woven into the handmade paper is an image of the opticians practice my father had on Thomas Street , where I spent a lot of my younger years working for him.
